Gent by Honeywell is a British-designed addressable fire detection system built around a proprietary communication protocol, a controlled dealer network, and a panel range that scales from a single loop in a small commercial unit to a fully networked estate across dozens of buildings. It sits at the premium end of the addressable market, and it is sold differently from most fire alarm equipment: rather than open trade supply, Gent products are distributed through a small number of Honeywell-appointed System Integrators. What Gent by Honeywell is
Gent has manufactured fire detection equipment in the UK since the 1970s and has been part of Honeywell since 2005, trading today as Gent by Honeywell. The system is built on a proprietary communication protocol between panel and field devices rather than an open multiprotocol standard, which is a deliberate design choice: a closed protocol lets Honeywell engineer the panel, the detectors and the software as one integrated system, with a level of polling speed, diagnostic depth and backward compatibility that is harder to guarantee across a mixed-vendor loop.
That closed architecture is also why Gent is specified so heavily on larger commercial and public-realm sites in the UK. A consistent protocol across decades of product means a system installed in the 1990s can often still be extended today, which matters on estates where the original installer, the maintenance contract, or even the manufacturer relationship has changed hands more than once.
The System Integrator model — why Gent is not open trade
Unlike conventional or generic addressable equipment, Gent products are not available through general electrical wholesale or open fire trade counters. Honeywell distributes Gent through a defined network of approved System Integrators, each vetted and trained to design, supply, commission and support Gent systems to the manufacturer's standard. For a specifier or installer, this matters at the point of purchase as much as on site: equipment sourced outside the approved channel carries no assurance of authenticity, firmware currency or manufacturer warranty, and a System Integrator is who Honeywell will engage on technical queries, product recalls or protocol updates. The panel ranges: Vigilon Plus, Compact Plus and Nano
Gent's current panel range covers three tiers, sized to the scale of the site rather than to a single fixed product. Vigilon Plus is the top of the range: a networkable, multi-loop platform intended for large or campus-style sites — hospitals, universities, shopping centres, high-rise residential and mixed-use developments — where panels across separate buildings or floors need to operate as one coordinated system with shared cause and effect logic across the network.
Compact Plus sits in the middle tier, built for single- or multi-loop buildings that need full addressable functionality — individual device identification, sophisticated cause and effect, and CLSS-ready connectivity — without the networking capacity of Vigilon Plus. It is the panel most often specified for a standalone office block, retail unit or industrial building. Nano is the entry point into the Gent range: a compact single-loop panel for smaller commercial premises where addressable detection is required but the site does not need network capability or a large device count. Choosing between the three comes down to loop count, whether the site needs to network with other panels, and expected future expansion — detail worth working through at design stage via request a quote.
Detection: S-Quad, S-Cubed and S4 devices
Gent's current detector generation runs on the S4 protocol and is built around the S-Quad range — multi-sensor detectors that combine more than one sensing element (for example optical and heat) in a single head, with the panel's addressable intelligence used to interpret the combined signal rather than relying on a single sensor type. This multi-criteria approach is one of the reasons addressable multi-sensor detection has displaced single-sensor devices on many commercial specifications: it can reduce susceptibility to the particular false-alarm triggers that affect one sensor type in isolation, without the compromises of a fixed, non-adjustable detector.
A defining strength of the S-Quad is that the same device can also carry its own alarm output. Where many systems mount a detector and then a separate sounder or sounder base beside it, an S-Quad can combine the multi-sensor head with a sounder, a voice sounder and a high-power visual alarm device (VAD) in one loop-powered unit, certified to EN 54 and occupying a single loop address. Carbon monoxide sensing is available on multisensor variants. For the installer that means fewer separate parts, one back box and one address to commission per point, with audible and visual alarm coverage designed into the detection layout rather than added as a second pass.
Alongside S-Quad, the S-Cubed and wider S4 device families cover the rest of the field population — sounders, call points, input/output units and interface modules — all communicating over the same S4 protocol. Because the protocol has been maintained with backward compatibility as a design principle, current S4 devices and panels can generally be added to and coexist with earlier generations of Gent equipment on the same site, which is what allows an estate to extend an existing Vigilon system in stages over many years rather than replacing it wholesale. Loop loading and standby: why Gent often needs fewer panels
Because Gent's sounders and VADs draw their power from the loop and the panel is engineered with a generous alarm-current budget, a single Gent loop can carry more sounders and beacons than many competing systems allow before the loop reaches its power limit — up to 200 addressable points per loop, with Vigilon Plus scaling to six loops in one panel. On a device-dense building this changes the hardware count. A design that fits comfortably on a single four-loop Gent panel can, on a system with a tighter per-loop alarm budget, need a second panel and loop card to carry the same alarm devices. One panel rather than two means less enclosure space, a single power supply and battery set, and a simpler network to commission and maintain.
The same efficiency carries through to standby power. Gent panels run at a low quiescent current, so the 24-hour and 72-hour standby durations that BS 5839-1 can call for are readily achieved with batteries housed inside the panel, or in a single paired battery box, rather than a larger separate battery cabinet. On a large installation that is a genuine saving in space, materials and installation time — and it is part of why Gent is specified so consistently on complex, device-heavy estates where panel count and power design matter as much as the detectors themselves.
CLSS cloud connectivity
Gent panels can be connected to Honeywell CLSS (Connected Life Safety Services), a cloud platform that layers live panel event data, remote diagnostics and compliance reporting on top of the physical system. CLSS is an addition to a Gent installation rather than a requirement of it — a Vigilon Plus, Compact Plus or Nano panel functions as a complete standalone fire alarm system with no cloud connection at all, and connectivity is a decision made separately for sites where remote visibility or self-test detection make it worthwhile.

Why the closed protocol makes genuine parts and a System Integrator matter
Because Gent's S4 protocol is proprietary rather than open, a Gent system depends on genuine Gent hardware to function and remain compliant — there is no equivalent multiprotocol option, unlike Honeywell's own Morley-IAS range, which is designed to support third-party devices from manufacturers such as Apollo and Hochiki. Sourcing outside the approved channel risks counterfeit or grey-market devices that were never intended for the UK market, carry no verifiable warranty, and may not hold current firmware — all of which can undermine the system's compliance with BS 5839-1 regardless of how correctly it was designed on paper.
This is also why commissioning and ongoing extension work on a Gent system should stay with an approved System Integrator: only that route gives access to genuine parts, manufacturer-current documentation, and the design discipline the closed protocol was built to deliver. It is a relevant consideration under the 2025 revision of BS 5839-1, which sharpens expectations around competence and supply chain assurance across the system's working life, not just at initial installation.
