Detection at the incipient stage, not the flame stage.

An aspirating smoke detection (ASD) system works by suction: a fan in the detector draws air from the protected space through a network of small-bore sampling pipes, and a laser chamber analyses that air continuously. Because it samples actively rather than waiting for smoke to drift to a ceiling-mounted device, VESDA detects at concentrations far below conventional point detection — often while the problem is still a warm cable rather than a fire.

That is why VESDA is the specification default for data centres and comms rooms, high-bay warehousing, heritage and listed buildings, cold stores, atria and any space where downtime or loss is unthinkable and detectors are hard to reach for maintenance. It is equally at home guarding a single rack cabinet as a distribution shed.

What is a VESDA system?

VESDA — Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus — is Xtralis's aspirating smoke detection (ASD) platform. The detector continuously draws air from the protected space through a network of small-bore sampling pipes and analyses it centrally, detecting smoke at concentrations far below the threshold of conventional point detectors. That very early warning is why VESDA is specified for data centres, warehouses, heritage buildings, cold stores and other spaces where fire must be caught at the incipient stage.

How is VESDA different from normal point smoke detectors?

A point detector waits for smoke to reach the ceiling in detectable concentration; an aspirating system actively samples the air and detects far earlier — often while a fault is still just overheating insulation. Aspirating systems also protect spaces point detection handles badly: high ceilings, strong airflows that dilute smoke, inaccessible voids, and areas where detectors cannot be easily maintained.

How often do VESDA filters need replacing?

It depends on the detector model and how dirty the environment is — the detector monitors filter condition and flags when replacement is due, and the service schedule for the site sets the routine. We stock replacement filters and consumables for the VESDA range; send the detector model or the part number from the old filter and we will match it.

Which VESDA detector do I need?

It comes down to the size of the protected area, the number of sampling holes, and the environment. As a rule of thumb: VLC/VLF for small contained spaces, VEP/VEU for mainstream commercial coverage, VLI for industrial environments, and VEA where you need to know exactly which hole picked up the smoke.
