Xtralis VESDA Aspirating Smoke Detection
Xtralis is Honeywell's aspirating detection brand, and VESDA is the platform most UK specifications name by default. We supply the VESDA-E detector families, VEA tubed sampling and Sensepoint XCL gas sensors, along with the filters, aspirators and pipework that keep installed systems running — trade and end client, UK-wide.

Common Xtralis questions.
What does VESDA stand for?
Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus. It is Xtralis's aspirating smoke detection (ASD) platform: a fan inside the detector draws air continuously from the protected space through a network of small-bore sampling pipes, and a laser chamber analyses that air centrally. Smoke registers at concentrations well below the threshold of a conventional point detector — often while the problem is still overheating cable insulation rather than a fire.
Is Xtralis part of Honeywell?
Yes — Xtralis is a Honeywell fire-detection brand, sitting alongside stablemates such as Gent and Morley-IAS. The product coding is unchanged: VESDA-E detectors, VEA sampling points and Sensepoint XCL gas sensors all carry their original Xtralis part numbers, and those are the numbers to quote when ordering spares.
Which VESDA detector should I specify?
It comes down to the size of the protected area, the number of sampling holes and the environment. Broadly: VLF for small contained spaces such as switch rooms; VEP and VEU for mainstream commercial coverage; VLI where the environment is dirty or industrial; VES where one detector needs to report which pipe sector the smoke arrived on; and VEA where the exact sampling point has to be identified. Pipe network design settles the final answer — send us the drawing and the hole count.
What is the difference between a VESDA pipe network and VEA tubed sampling?
A conventional VESDA detector samples through rigid pipe with drilled holes and reports at detector or sector level. VEA runs microbore capillary tube from the detector out to individual sampling points, and each point is individually addressed — so an alarm names the cabinet rather than the corridor. VEA suits rack rooms, archive shelving and anywhere the response has to be pinpointed.
Do you supply VESDA filters and consumables?
Yes — replacement filters, aspirator assemblies, detection and sampling chambers, manifolds and front covers across the VESDA-E and VEA ranges, plus VLI and VLF specific spares. Send the detector model and the part number off the old component and we will match it. Mainland-UK dispatch on stock items.
Need Xtralis kit priced today?
Send the part numbers — same-day quotes on stocked items, and straight answers on lead times when it is not on the shelf.
