Which battery does my fire alarm panel take?
It depends on the panel and on the standby load, so work from the panel's own standby calculation rather than from whatever happens to be fitted. As a starting point, NP7-12 and NP17-12 cover a lot of Horizon, DXc and ZXSe panels, NP2.8-12 suits Morley Horizon panels, and on the Gent side 4015-501-YFR, 4015-514-YFR and 4015-602-YFR cover Nano, Vigilon Compact and Vigilon respectively. Why do fire alarm batteries need to be flame retardant?
Because they sit inside the fire alarm control equipment. A flame-retardant case is what panel manufacturers specify for standby duty, and it is what a commissioning or service engineer expects to find in the enclosure. Every battery on this hub is a flame-retardant-cased sealed lead-acid type, so a like-for-like replacement leaves the panel as it was originally certified.
How often should standby batteries be replaced?
Manufacturers typically quote a design life of three to five years for sealed lead-acid standby batteries in fire alarm service, and most maintenance regimes replace on that cycle, or sooner if a capacity check fails. Mark the fitting date on the battery when it goes in — it saves an argument at the next service visit.
Do batteries have to be replaced as a pair?
On a 24 V system, yes. Two 12 V batteries in series should be changed together and matched for type, capacity and age, because a tired cell in one drags the pair down and skews the standby time. The larger VA/PA emergency supply batteries — 581730, 581731 and 581732 — are specified to be used in pairs for the same reason.
