Gent vs Morley: comparing the two Honeywell addressable fire alarm systems

Two respected addressable fire alarm platforms, both owned by Honeywell, built on very different philosophies. This is a balanced, technical comparison to help you specify the right one for the site in front of you.

A question I am asked often is whether Gent or Morley is the better addressable fire alarm system. It is the wrong question. Both are Honeywell brands, both are properly engineered life-safety platforms, and both certify to the same British and European standards. What separates them is architecture and philosophy: Gent by Honeywell is a closed, tightly controlled ecosystem, while Morley-IAS is an open, multiprotocol one. The right choice depends on the building, the maintenance regime and who will hold the system for the next twenty years. This guide is written by Midland Fire Direct, a BAFE SP203-1 certified fire detection supplier, and we supply both platforms without favouring either.

Closed versus open: the protocol difference that shapes everything

The single most important distinction is the loop protocol. Gent runs a proprietary, closed protocol known as S4, which drives its own S-Quad, S-Cubed and S4 field devices. The panel and the devices are engineered as one system, which delivers excellent signalling resilience and diagnostics, but it also means you commit to the Gent device family for the life of the installation. Morley-IAS takes the opposite approach: its panels are multiprotocol and can drive third-party loop devices from Apollo, Hochiki and System Sensor. That openness gives the designer a wide device catalogue and avoids being tied to a single detector manufacturer.

This choice reaches well beyond first fix, and it is worth being precise about where Morley's openness actually sits, because it is easy to overstate. It is a choice made once, at design stage: the panel is multiprotocol, but as soon as a loop is fitted with, say, Apollo devices, that installation is committed to the Apollo protocol for its life — you cannot later drop a Hochiki or System Sensor detector onto the same loop. So the practical lock-in on an installed system is much the same as Gent's; the difference is that with Morley the installer chooses which protocol they are tied to, and that protocol is itself an open standard available from more than one supplier, whereas with Gent both the protocol and the supply channel are fixed by the manufacturer. Neither model is inherently superior. A closed system trades flexibility for integration and controlled quality; an open one gives freedom at specification, then asks the same long-term commitment to whatever was specified.

Where Gent's hardware earns its keep: the S-Quad and loop loading

If the closed protocol is Gent's cost, its device engineering is where that cost is repaid, and the S-Quad is the clearest example. On most systems a point that needs both detection and an alarm signal is two devices — a detector, plus a separate sounder or sounder base beside it. Gent's S-Quad platform folds that into a single loop-powered addressable device: multi-criteria detection — dual optical and heat, with carbon monoxide on multisensor variants — combined with the alarm output the point actually needs, whether a sounder, a voice sounder or a high-power visual alarm device, all certified to EN 54 and all on one loop address. Fewer parts, one back box, one address to commission, and voice and VAD coverage designed in rather than bolted on afterwards.

That integration compounds at loop level. Because Gent's sounders and VADs are powered from the loop and the panel carries a generous alarm-current budget, you can load a Gent loop with more sounders and beacons than many competing systems allow before the loop runs out of power — up to 200 addressable points per loop, with Vigilon Plus scaling to six loops in a single panel. In practice this changes the panel count. A device-dense design that fits comfortably on a four-loop Gent panel can, on a system with a tighter alarm-current budget per loop, need a second panel with its own loops to carry the same sounders and VADs. One panel instead of two means less enclosure space, a single power supply and battery set, and a simpler network to commission and maintain.

The same efficiency shows up in standby power. Gent's low quiescent current means the 24-hour and 72-hour standby durations that BS 5839-1 can call for are readily met with batteries that sit inside the panel, or in a single paired battery box, rather than forcing a larger separate battery cabinet. On a large site that is a real saving in space, cost and installation time. None of this makes Gent the automatic choice — the closed ecosystem and the integrator model still have to suit the client — but it is why, on device-dense buildings, a Gent design often lands on fewer panels and a tidier power scheme than the open-protocol alternative.

Availability and the System Integrator model

Gent is not sold as open trade. It is distributed through a network of approved Gent System Integrators who are trained, accredited and supported by Honeywell to design, commission and maintain the platform. That model protects installation quality and keeps competence high, but it does mean the end client's choice of maintainer is drawn from that approved network rather than the wider market. Morley-IAS is more openly available and is installed and maintained by a much broader base of fire alarm engineers, which tends to give building owners more competitive choice when a maintenance contract comes up for renewal.

For a specifier this is a genuine long-term consideration, not just a purchasing detail. Ask early who will hold the maintenance contract, how many competent firms can service the platform in the building's region, and how comfortable the client is being served by an approved-integrator network. The answer often points more clearly to one platform than any technical spec sheet will.

Panel ranges and where each one sits

Gent's current addressable ranges run from the Nano panel for smaller systems, through the Compact Plus, up to Vigilon Plus for large and networked sites. The range is built around resilience, networking across multiple panels, and long-standing backward compatibility with field devices, which is valuable on estates that have grown over decades. Morley-IAS spans the Max at the compact end, the ZXSe mid-range, and the DXc for larger multi-loop and networked installations, giving a scalable line-up that covers small commercial premises up to substantial buildings.

Both families support networking and cause-and-effect programming, and both can connect to Honeywell's CLSS cloud services for remote monitoring and self-test where the site licenses it. Where they differ is positioning: Gent tends to be specified on premium, large or safety-critical estates, while Morley is frequently chosen where flexibility and a broad installer base matter most.

Maintenance, spares and the twenty-year view

Fire alarm systems are lived with for a long time, so future maintenance should weigh as heavily as first cost. Gent's backward compatibility is a real strength here: field devices from earlier generations are generally supported by current panels, which helps phased replacement on large sites without wholesale rip-and-replace. The trade-off is that spares and expansion stay within the Gent catalogue and the approved integrator network. With Morley it depends on which protocol was fitted: the panels are multiprotocol so the designer had the choice at the outset, but once a loop is running Apollo, Hochiki or System Sensor devices the maintainer has to stay on that protocol. The advantage is that an open protocol like Apollo is sold through many suppliers, so sourcing spares for the installed protocol is rarely tied to a single channel — but the installation is still committed to the protocol its loops were built on, just as a Gent loop stays within the Gent catalogue.

Whichever route you take, sound documentation matters more than the badge on the panel. A clear cause-and-effect schedule and a disciplined testing regime keep either platform serviceable and compliant with BS 5839-1 across its working life.

When to choose which

Lean towards Gent where the site is large, networked or safety-critical, where single-vendor integration and diagnostic depth are prized, where an existing Gent estate is being extended, and where the client is comfortable with the approved System Integrator model for the long term. Its resilience and backward compatibility genuinely earn their place on complex estates. Lean towards Morley where flexibility and openness are the priority, where the design benefits from a wide choice of loop devices across Apollo, Hochiki or System Sensor, where the client wants a broad base of firms able to maintain the system, or where a scalable platform is needed across a varied portfolio of buildings.

There is no universal winner, and any honest supplier will tell you the same. The correct answer is the one that fits the building, the risk assessment and the people who will look after it. Gent vs Morley questions.

Are Gent and Morley the same company?

Both are brands owned by Honeywell, but they are distinct product lines with different architectures and are not interchangeable. Gent by Honeywell uses a proprietary closed protocol and its own field devices, while Morley-IAS is an open, multiprotocol platform. Shared ownership does not mean shared devices or shared loops.

Can a Gent panel run Morley or third-party loop devices, or the other way round?

No. Gent panels drive Gent's own S4-protocol devices only, so you cannot fit third-party detectors to a Gent loop. Morley-IAS panels are multiprotocol and can drive supported devices from Apollo, Hochiki or System Sensor, but each loop must be configured for the protocol of the devices installed on it. You cannot mix incompatible protocols on a single loop.

Do I have to use an approved integrator for a Gent system?

Gent is distributed and supported through Honeywell's network of approved Gent System Integrators, so design, commissioning and maintenance are normally carried out by an accredited firm rather than any open-trade installer. Morley-IAS is more openly available and serviceable by a broader base of engineers. This is worth confirming at specification stage, because it shapes who can maintain the system for its whole life.

If I already have a Gent estate, is it worth switching to Morley when I expand?

Usually not for the sake of it. Gent's long-standing backward compatibility means current panels generally support earlier-generation field devices, which allows phased extension of an existing estate without replacing everything. Introducing a different platform on the same site adds two maintenance regimes and two spares inventories, so switching is normally only justified by a specific design or commercial reason rather than as a default.

What makes the Gent S-Quad different from a standard detector?

The S-Quad is a single loop-powered addressable device that combines multi-criteria detection — optical smoke and heat, with carbon monoxide on multisensor variants — with the alarm output a point needs, whether a sounder, a voice sounder or a visual alarm device, all certified to EN 54.
